Catholic Priest and Executive Director of Caritas, Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh has reflected on Sierra Leone’s Independence celebration highlighting some key aspects.

‘’As we draw closer to celebrating our Independence Day, we are reminded that this is not just a moment of celebration, but a moment of honest reflection.
The Catholic Priest noted that Sierra Leone belongs to each and every Sierra Leonean and that it progress or lack of it is a reflection of our collective attitude, choices, and responsibilities as citizens.
‘’We must learn to embrace a positive mindset—one that acknowledges what is good, has the courage to question what is not going well, and more importantly, offers constructive solutions for a better future,’’ he said.
Fr. Konteh noted that criticism without direction only deepens the problem; but criticism with purpose builds the nation.
‘’Too often, negativity, individualism, and partisan thinking divide us and slow our progress. The spirit of “we versus them” has no place in nation-building. Our strength lies in unity—in choosing “us” over division, and putting country before personal or political interest,’’ Fr. Konteh noted.
Let us also be mindful of how we speak about our nation. Constant negativity does not only harm our image—it weakens our collective hope and confidence. We must become ambassadors of truth, responsibility, and hope.
He said on this year’s Independence, let us renew our commitment, To think positively, To act responsibly, To speak constructively, And to work together for the common good.
‘’Sierra Leone is our shared home. Its future depends on all of us.
Let us move forward—not as individuals divided—but as one people, one nation, with one purpose,’’ Fr. Peter Konteh.
