Our late Holy Father, Pope Francis, demonstrated that true leaders must be willing to go to extraordinary lengths to achieve peace, reconciliation and national unity.
In a remarkable act of humility in 2019, Pope Francis knelt and kissed the feet of South Sudan’s political leaders during a spiritual retreat at the Vatican. Through this powerful gesture, he pleaded with them to put aside their differences, end the conflict and work together for the peace of their people. His action reminded the world that no sacrifice is too great when peace and human lives are at stake.
What we are witnessing in Sierra Leone—efforts by political and national leaders to engage one another and promote dialogue—is a positive gesture toward peace. Whenever we put the unity and stability of our country above selfish interests and political divisions, Sierra Leone becomes stronger.
For ordinary citizens, what matters most is not the victory of one political party over another, but the peace, security and development of the nation. Our people desire a country where they can live without fear, provide for their families, educate their children and look toward the future with hope.
We may have different political ideologies and opinions, but these differences should never become a reason for hatred, violence or division. Democracy allows us to disagree, but patriotism requires us to respect one another and protect the peace of our country.
Political parties will come and go, and leaders will serve for a time, but Sierra Leone belongs to all of us. We must never damage our nation’s peace simply to defend our political interests. Leadership must be guided by humility, dialogue, justice and concern for the common good.
Let us continue to pray and work for peace, reconciliation and national unity in Sierra Leone. May God give our leaders the wisdom to place the country above personal and party interests, and may He help every citizen become an instrument of peace.
We may differ in our opinions, but we must remain united as one people and one nation. Sierra Leone is greater than any individual, political party or personal interest.
