Catholic Church Perspective on Press Freedom

By Mohamed Konneh

The Catholic Church recognizes press freedom as an essential pillar of democracy, justice, and human dignity. A free and responsible media gives voice to the voiceless, exposes injustice, promotes accountability, and helps society grow in truth and peace.

At the same time, the Church teaches that freedom of expression must always be guided by moral responsibility, respect for human dignity, and commitment to the common good.

Journalism should never become a tool for hatred, misinformation, division, or manipulation. Rather, the media should build bridges of understanding, dialogue, and national unity.

Pope Francis reminds us:

“Communication must always promote human dignity, respect, and truth.”

Today, press freedom continues to face serious challenges across the world. According to recent global reports:

Global press freedom is now considered at its lowest level in 25 years. (The Guardian)

More than half of the world’s population lives in countries where press freedom is classified as “difficult” or “very serious.” (The Guardian)

Around 330 journalists were imprisoned globally in 2025, many under charges linked to national security or anti-state laws. (Reuters)

A record 129 journalists and media workers were killed worldwide in 2025, making it one of the deadliest years for journalism in modern history. (Reuters)

Media professionals continue to face threats including intimidation, censorship, online harassment, violence, political pressure, economic attacks, and misinformation campaigns. (The Guardian)

As Christians and responsible citizens, we must support ethical journalism that promotes truth, justice, peace, reconciliation, and national development. The media must never be used to divide people, spread hatred, or destroy reputations, but rather to enlighten society and strengthen democracy.

Let us use communication to build understanding, not division; peace, not conflict; truth, not propaganda
