Police in the Eastern Region traffic division have on Friday, 15th August, disclosed on Gola Agriculture Radio “On the Road” program that road accidents have claimed 41 lives between January and July 2025, with motorcycles topping the fatalities chart.
In his statement, the traffic data analyst east, Inspector Mowai Richard Nyallay said that of particular concern is the fact that motorcycles have been identified as the predominant cause of these fatalities, with a significant 21 deaths directly associated with motorcycle crashes. He pointed out that 20 fatalities stemmed from incidents involving other types of motor vehicles. “This same interval has resulted in 60 individuals sustaining severe injuries linked to motorcycle accidents, alongside 11 suffering serious injuries from various motor vehicle-related incidents,” Inspector Nyallay added.
Inspector Nyallay further reported that the proactive enforcement measures implemented by law enforcement agencies have yielded financial penalties amounting to Le 74,400, accrued from 150 distinct cases referred to the judicial system.
Operations Officer Inspector Augustine Kposowa acknowledged the inherent difficulties in enforcing traffic regulations, particularly the challenges posed by unlicensed motorcycles, which are prevalent in the region. He emphasised the necessity of adopting a collaborative and human-centred approach to road safety, urging the local Bike Riders Union and Drivers Union to partner with police authorities. “This partnership is deemed essential for fostering mutual understanding and minimizing conflicts, ultimately contributing to a significant reduction in road accidents and enhancing the overall safety of the community,” he emphasized.
The police have vowed to continue their efforts to reduce road accidents and prevent further loss of life in the region. They urge all road users to drive safely and follow traffic regulations to avoid road tragedies.
