Parliament Ratifies 2024 Country Planning Act                                  

The bill entitled the National Country Planning Act, 2024 having gone through the committee stage and third reading on Monday 11 August, 2025 and ratified by parliament.

The Minister of Land, Housing and Country Planning Dr. Turad Senesie, during the second and third reading stated that after 71 years of the existence of parliament, Sierra Leone is having this landmark law.

“This law is going to transform our Urban Cities and transform Sierra Leone as a whole. We are going to have freed spaces in our cities and towns and we going to have a better drainage system into our cities and town, Dr. Turad Senesie said.

The Minister of Lands noted since 1946 to the present date there has never been this kind of reform in terms of Country Planning in Sierra Leone and that it is time for a new chapter in country planning.

“71 years down the line, we are now doing a review that will stand the test of time. This is comprehensive review for Country Planning. We will make sure this law work for the people of this country.

The Minister maintained that the Act will ensure councils take charge of planning matters from drainage systems and housing, to market locations and community facilities.

He said the Ministry will work closely with the councils to ensure these plans meet national standards

The bill was reported by the chairman of the Legislative committee Honorable Hon. Abdul Sulaiman Marray-Conteh, while reporting it in the well of parliament.

He stated that the bill will adopt and Mitigate Climate change, encourage Public participation, ensure effective enforcement to support the development of infrastructure housing and public facilities that contribute to improving the living standards of the people in both Rural and Urban Areas.
