Too Many People Suffer From Mental Health

…Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh

By Mohamed Konneh

Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh has said in Freetown that too many people are suffering as a result of mental health. Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh was speaking during mental health day celebration with the Theme: “Access to Service: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies.”

‘’This year’s World Mental Health Day theme, “Access to Service: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” reminds us of a truth that is often overlooked: emergencies do not only destroy buildings, homes, and infrastructure—they also disrupt minds, emotions, and communities,’’ Fr. Konteh said.

He said in every humanitarian crisis, the scars are not only physical but deeply psychological. People lose not just their possessions, but also their sense of safety, hope, and belonging.

‘’As we rebuild communities, we must also help rebuild lives from within—by addressing trauma, anxiety, and emotional pain.

He said work can be a vital part of recovery and human dignity. It gives structure, purpose, and a sense of independence. Yet, mental illness can be a very lonely and frightening experience.

‘’Too many people continue to suffer in silence, fearful of stigma and discrimination in their workplaces and communities.

At Caritas Freetown, we reaffirm our commitment to making our work environment a place of compassion and support. We believe that love and care must define how we treat one another, especially in times of difficulty. Our mission calls us not only to feed and shelter the body but to heal the mind and lift the spirit, Fr. Konteh emphasized.

‘’As we mark this year’s World Mental Health Day, let us stand together in empathy and solidarity. Let us ensure that mental health care is accessible to all—especially those living through catastrophes and emergencies, the Caritas Executive Director noted.

He called to make workplaces and communities spaces of healing, acceptance, and to give love.

‘’Happy World Mental Health Day! Together, we can make mental wellbeing a shared reality for everyone’’.
