A Conversation with a Young Mind – 10-Yrs-Old boy with Fr Peter A. L. Konteh
Today, I had a profound conversation with a thoughtful ten-year-old boy who brought forth questions that reveal the deep concerns of our time. His earnest inquiries reminded me of the urgent issues facing our world and the responsibility we all share in shaping the future.
Father, you’re involved in charity and humanitarian work.
Why is it that governments in developed countries especially USA stop humanitarian aid for their poor countries ????????
This question touches the heart of international relations and economics. Many governments do face constraints, and some donors may divert funds for political reasons. More often, however, it’s about prioritizing various interests—sometimes, humanitarian aid takes a backseat to national policy decisions.
Why are powerful countries cutting school feeding programs?
School feeding programs are crucial for children’s health, education, and emotional well-being. The unfortunate reality is that budget cuts often target these vital initiatives in favor of military spending or other political interests. This misguided prioritization jeopardizes the well-being of the most vulnerable among us—the children.
What about medical aid for HIV patients and others?
Medical aid cuts are heartbreaking, particularly when they affect people’s lives. Health programs dealing with diseases like HIV often depend on international support, which can decrease as political conditions change. It’s crucial for us to advocate for continuous support, emphasizing that health care is a fundamental human right.
Do those in power have children? Can they sleep well at night?”
This question reflects a profound understanding of our shared humanity. It is troubling to think that some leaders may turn a blind eye to suffering and injustice. We must encourage empathy across all levels of leadership, urging them to consider the impact of their decisions on future generations.
What about our friends in war-torn countries, like Gaza, who aren’t getting food or water?”
The humanitarian crises in war-torn areas remind us of the dire consequences of conflict. The international community, including organizations like the UN, was created to address these very issues. However, bureaucracy, political interests, and sometimes indifference hinder their effectiveness.
What are our politicians and religious leaders doing about this?”
This calls for those in power to be held accountable. Politicians must prioritize peace and humanitarian aid over personal gain, and religious leaders must advocate for love, compassion, and justice. Both must work together to influence change.
Are these cuts due to corruption in our governments or mismanagement by NGOs?”
Corruption and mismanagement can indeed divert resources from those in need. However, it’s essential to recognize that many dedicated individuals and organizations work tirelessly to support humanitarian efforts. We need systems in place that ensure transparency and accountability on all fronts.
Do leaders in powerful countries watch the news and see the violence in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan?”
Most likely, they do. Yet, the challenge lies in transforming that awareness into action. Many grapple with competing interests, but we must remind them that true leadership involves prioritizing peace and understanding.
“Do they listen to religious leaders and believe in humanity?”
Religion, in its many forms, fundamentally teaches compassion. It is imperative for leaders—regardless of their faith—to listen to the voices advocating for peace and humanity. We share a collective responsibility to act in the name of love and understanding.
“Father, please give me answers to my questions; our future depends on how we shape the world today.”
Your questions are vital, and they demand clarity and commitment. If we introduce love and compassion into our communities, we will create a future that reflects those values. The opposite is also true—hatred and discrimination lead to a fractured society.
It is my hope that your generation continues to ask these critical questions and seeks answers rooted in love, justice, and solidarity. Let us work together to ensure a world where empathy reigns, and humanitarian aid flourishes—because the future indeed depends on our actions today.
We all have a role to play in steering this world towards peace and compassion, and in doing so, we will build a future that is brighter for all.
