SLAJ Demands Probe on Assault of Media Trainer and Lawyer

The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) strongly condemns the alleged assault and reported misconduct involving officers of the Sierra Leone Police against Mr. Paul Kamara Esq. on the evening of April 4, 2026, at Adonkia Police Station, Western Rural District.

SLAJ notes that Mr. Kamara, a media trainer and legal practitioner, was at the police station in connection with an ongoing investigation into the death of his colleague, Augustine Sensie Bangura.

According to an account provided by Mr. Kamara, he was allegedly subjected to physical assault, including being forcibly restrained, dragged, and pepper-sprayed by officers following an interaction at the police premises. The reported incident, if established, raises serious concerns about the use of force, professional conduct, and respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.

While SLAJ has not yet received the official account of the Sierra Leone Police regarding this matter, the Association considers the allegations sufficiently grave to warrant urgent attention.

SLAJ therefore calls on the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police to institute an immediate, thorough, and impartial investigation into the incident. The Association further urges that any officers found responsible be held fully accountable in accordance with the law.

SLAJ also calls for the safety and protection of Mr. Kamara and any potential witnesses, and encourages the Independent Police Complaints Board and other relevant oversight institutions to closely monitor the process to ensure transparency and justice.

The Association reiterates that respect for the rule of law, professionalism, and accountability must remain the cornerstone of policing in a democratic society. Incidents of alleged abuse, if left unaddressed, risk eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions.

SLAJ will continue to follow developments closely and stands ready to support all efforts aimed at ensuring justice and accountability.
