Patriotism is More Than Waving a Flag

…Rev. Fr. Peter Konteh

The Executive Director of Caritas Freetown, Rev. Fr. Perter Konteh has said in Freetown that patriotism is more than waving a flag or singing the national anthem with pride.

The Executive Director of Caritas Freetown was speaking over the weekend stressing on the topic of patriotism.

‘’It is a daily commitment to the growth and healing of our nation. True patriotism is not loud in words, but powerful in action,’’ he said.

Fr. Konteh noted that to love Sierra Leone is to refuse corruption and to love Sierra Leone is to protect peace.

‘’To love Sierra Leone is to invest in our youth, support our farmers, respect our laws, and build unity across tribe, region, and religion,’’ Fr. Konteh noted.

He said a patriotic citizen does not ask, “What is the country doing for me?” but rather, “What am I doing for my country?”

‘’Our nation has faced challenges — war, poverty, unemployment, division — yet it continues to rise because of men and women who choose responsibility over selfishness’’.

Fr. Konteh noted that patriotism means, Serving with integrity, Speaking truth with courage, Working with discipline, Praying for our leaders, Protecting our national unity.

He said if we truly love our country, we must help it grow, heal from its wounds, and prosper for future generations.

May we not only call ourselves Sierra Leoneans.

May we live as responsible patriots.
