Parliament Approves  Ibrahim Sannoh as Minister of Youth Affairs 

The Tenth Report of the Committee on Appointments and Public Service, chaired by the Leader of Government Business, Honourable Mathew Sahr Nyuma, has on Thursday 08/05/2025 debated and unanimously approved by Parliament. The following presidential nominees were approved by Parliament: Ibrahim Sannoh, Minister of Youth Affairs and Mohamed Alie Bah, Member National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA).

Presenting the Tenth Report,  the Deputy Majority and Leader of Government Business, Hon.  Bashiru Silikie, said the Presidential Nominees were interviewed on oaths and under strict procedures on issues pertaining to their educational backgrounds. Probing questions covering  a wide range of issues relating to track records pertinent to their declared assets, tax obligations, and vision for sustainable tenure.  He assured the plenary that the report is the unanimous decision of the Committee on Appointments and Public Service.

Seconding the motion, the Whip of Opposition underscored the appointments of Ibrahim Sannoh as a youthful leadership but denounced the trend of development.  The MP stressed on  youths empowers and advised the youthful nominee to address the national agenda without politics. “You have a good opportunity to set the youthful agenda that works for all, “he said and went on to say Youths are most involved in crimes and that the Ministry of Youth has a role to play in educating them.

Speaking on the nominee for  NaSCA, the dynamic MP said most of the time money provided for Citizens is utilized by a few groups of people, which is causing more hardship to the people of Sierra Leone.

Contributing to the debate, the Member of Parliament from Moyamba District, Honourable Veronica Kadie Sesay, said the nominees were rightly nominated by President Bio.  She expressed optimism that  the nominees would  work in the interest of Sierra Leone. She encouraged the nominees to always place Sierra Leone above all. She described the nominee to the Ministry of Youth as someone consistent and hardworking. ” You are going to the Ministry of Youth to represent all young people in Sierra Leone and not only SLPP youth. Please go and represent them well,” she said.

Rounding up the debate on the side of the Opposition, the Acting Leader of Opposition, Hon. Aaron Koroma said that Parliament has been exceptional in supporting young people in Sierra Leone through the enactment of progressive laws that have a great impact on young people. He added that there are dozens of systemic problems affecting youth and that the development of skills for the youth is also a major concern for young people in the country. He said that most of the time, when incentives are disbursed to the ministry,the youth are left out in the distribution of those resources. He urged the new appointee in the youth ministry to develop a bill and policies that will seek the welfare of youth and make them more meaningful in the country. “When you increase communication tariff, it  affects mostly the youth in the country,” he said.

In his roundup debate, Acting Majority Leader of Government Business, Hon. Bashiru Silikie said, “Young people are essential in the growth and development of any nation.” He encouraged the appointee to go to the Ministry of Youth Affairs to ensure sustainable skills development for the young people of Sierra Leone. He admonished the Ministry of Youth Affairs to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to ensure young people are empowered through formal and informal education.

Honourable Bashiru Silikie described the nominee going to NaSCA as someone who is experienced, intelligent, and diligent in his activities. He encouraged him to support and work with other team members at NaSCA.

In another development, Parliament of Sierra Leone has, on Thursday 08/05/2025, ratified the following agreements:

1. Agreement on the cooperation with regards to the creation of the West Africa Science service center on Climate change and Adapted Land use (WASCAL)

2. Additional Act to the cooperation Agreement establishing the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land use (WASCAL).

3. Constitution of the West Africa Science Service Center on climate change and Adapted Land used WASCAL Text Adopted by the 1st WASCAL Council of Ministers.

Also the Agreement and schedule of conditions of contact for the Development and housing of a unified E-Resident and work permit system between the Ministry of Employment, Labor and social security and the Ministry of Internal Affairs through the Sierra Leone Immigration Department and constrict system Limited, was ratified by Parliament on the same day.
