In a strong call for leadership rooted in unity and service, the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Ambassador Tamba Lamina, has charged newly appointed Regent Chiefs to prioritize peace, stability, and good governance in their chiefdoms.
Speaking during an induction ceremony held at the Ministry’s conference room on the 6th Floor of the Youyi Building in Freetown, Minister Lamina underscored the critical role Regent Chiefs play in maintaining order and facilitating development at the grassroots level.
He emphasized that the tenure of a Regent Chief must be marked by collaboration with Chiefdom Councils, community stakeholders, and other local governance structures to foster harmony and prepare the ground for peaceful and transparent elections.
The Minister warned against misconduct and overstepping of authority, particularly cautioning against land grabbing, unauthorized land sales, and the removal or replacement of recognized Chiefdom stakeholders. “Your mandate is to serve, not to divide,” he stressed. “Peace and stability must guide your actions, not personal interests or sentiments.”
The ceremony saw the formal induction of three Regent Chiefs:
• Regent Chief Mohamed Sesay of Mamunatha Mayossoh Chiefdom, Tonkolili District
• Regent Chief Boyzie Lemoh of Kakua Chiefdom, Bo District
• Regent Chief Amadu Bangura of Kamukeh Chiefdom, Koinadugu District
Minister Lamina congratulated the appointees, noting that their leadership would be crucial during this transitional period. “You have been chosen at a time when your people need wisdom, fairness, and a commitment to unity,” he said.
The Regent Chiefs, in turn, expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in them by the government and pledged to uphold the principles of peace, transparency, and development in their chiefdoms.
The event was graced by several senior government officials, including the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Bai M. Thuray; Chief Administrator of Bo District, Senior District Officer for Bo, Mr. Idrasa Kamara; and Mr. Alkali D.O. from Koinadugu District.
As Sierra Leone continues to strengthen local governance, the call for peace and accountability among traditional leaders remains central to national development.
