In a significant move to bolster urban sanitation, the Minister of Local Government and Community Affairs, Honorable Tamba Lamina, conducted an official visit to the Bo City Council landfill site on Wednesday, 9th October 2025. The visit was part of the Ministry’s ongoing partnership with the organization Welthunger Hilfe (WHH) to strengthen service delivery in local councils across Sierra Leone.
During the tour, Chief Administrator Henry Powell welcomed the Minister and commended his ministry’s continued support, specifically pointing to the provision of waste trucks. Powell informed the Minister that, despite significant resource constraints, the Council has been working diligently to improve waste collection and disposal services for city residents.
In his response, Minister Lamina expressed appreciation for the council’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy city. However, he underscored the critical need for enhanced infrastructure and more sustainable waste management systems. “The landfill site plays a central role in the city’s waste management structure. As a government, we are committed to strengthening the capacity of local councils to deliver effective services to their various jurisdictions,” the Minister stated.
Following his statement, the Minister inspected the landfill facilities and listened to the challenges outlined by the Chief Administrator and the Waste Management Department manager, Hinga Navo. He concluded by encouraging the council to explore innovative approaches, including recycling and waste-to-energy initiatives, to promote long-term environmental sustainability.
