In a vibrant ceremony held on March 14, 2026, at the GTI Sundu Town Campus, Koidu City, Kono District. Kono University of Science and Technology (KUST) officially matriculated its newest cohort of students for the 2025/2026 academic year. The event marked a historic milestone for the burgeoning institution as it cements its position as a hub for scientific and technological advancement in Sierra Leone.

In his keynote address, Vice-Chancellor and Principal Prof. Tamba Jamiru emphasized KUST’s trajectory toward becoming a premier center of excellence. Highlighting the rapid progress made since December 2024, Prof. Jamiru noted significant infrastructural upgrades, including the implementation of power supply and high-speed Starlink internet connectivity. He also underscored the university’s growing global footprint through strategic academic partnerships designed to bolster programs in Mining Engineering, Agricultural Sciences, and Computer Science.

The Registrar, Mr. Alpha A. Jalloh, formally presented the matriculants, affirming that each student had met the rigorous requirements for admission. He reassured the assembly of the administration’s unwavering commitment to fostering a conducive environment for high-level research and learning.
Echoing the call for excellence, Senior Finance Officer Dr. Nyande Sia Fania encouraged students to remain steadfast in their financial obligations to ensure the continued provision of top-tier facilities. “Success is 1% genius and 99% hard work,” she remarked, specifically challenging female students to persevere and lead in their respective fields.

The ceremony also featured messages of solidarity from local leadership and staff associations: Regent Chief Charles Quee, representing the Traditional Leaders and Paramount Chiefs of Kono, reaffirmed the community’s full support for the university’s development. Rev. Alfred Jones, President of the Academic Staff Association, reminded students that their primary responsibility is the relentless pursuit of academic integrity.
Mr. Sahr Sam Ansumana, President of the Administrative Staff Association and University PRO, called on the matriculants to serve as worthy ambassadors of KUST, upholding the institution’s rules and projecting a positive image to the world.
The atmosphere was one of palpable optimism as the new students took their oaths, symbolizing the beginning of a transformative journey. As KUST continues to expand—with a new nursing program slated for June the 2025/2026 class stands at the forefront of a new era for education in Kono District.
