Free Education Project Commissions Four Classroom Building in Pujehun

It was a moment of celebration and pride in Yoni, Lower Kayimba Section, Kpanga Chiefdom Pujehun District, as the Free Education Project Secretariat (FEPS) commissioned a newly constructed four classroom school building  with administrative facilities. The school, known as Smart Start Academy, was originally established in 2022 and now stands revitalized to better serve the educational needs of the community.

The commissioning  attracted a large gathering of community members, education stakeholders, local leaders, and dignitaries. At the center of the event was the Project Coordinator of FEPS, Mr. Ambrose Sesay, who officially unveiled the new structure. In his remarks, Mr. Sesay highlighted that the initiative is part of the government’s Free Quality Education program, supported by the World Bank and other development partners.

“This is not just about building schools,” Mr. Sesay stated. “We also focus on renovating existing school structures and training teachers to ensure quality learning. The entire Free Education project has a budget of $106 million, and I am pleased to share that 79% of that has already been utilized effectively and transparently.”

He reaffirmed the Secretariat’s commitment to improving access to education, especially in rural communities like Yoni, where infrastructure and resources have long been a challenge.

Welcoming the delegation, Town Chief Mary Kaikai extended her heartfelt appreciation to the Free Education Project Secretariat and praised President Julius Maada Bio’s government for its vision and commitment to education.

“Our children now have a better chance at learning. We thank the government and all those who brought this dream to life,” she said. The event was marked by traditional flair, with cultural dances and the presence of Sowei popular symbols of Sierra Leonean festivities setting a joyful tone and showcasing the community’s deep cultural heritage.

With the new school building now completed, Smart Start Academy is expected to open its doors to more children in the community, offering them a solid foundation for a brighter future.
