Diplomatic Breakthrough Secures Release of Abducted Personnel

…Though Border Tensions Remain High

Sixteen Sierra Leonean security personnel who were abducted by the Guinean army earlier this week have been released following urgent diplomatic intervention, the government has confirmed.

The personnel were taken on Monday during an incident along the volatile border region. However, following high-level talks led by Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy Kabba, the individuals were handed over and are now reported to be “safely” in the minister’s custody in Conakry.

Minister Kabba is currently heading a senior delegation to the Guinean capital as both nations work urgently to de-escalate border disputes that have intensified in recent months. The discussions aim to find an amicable solution to the recurring tensions.

Despite the release, fresh concerns have emerged regarding Guinea’s intentions along the frontier. Hon. Fallah Tengbeh, a Member of Parliament representing Kissi Teng Chiefdom in Kailahun district, has raised alarms over what he describes as an imminent threat following another unauthorized incursion.

According to Hon. Tengbeh, a contingent of heavily armed Guinean soldiers entered Sokoma village earlier this week. During their incursion, the soldiers allegedly informed local residents and the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces personnel stationed there that they intend to return to take control of the area.

Sokoma village is located approximately 300 metres from the disputed town of Yenga, an area currently under the control of the Guinean army. The lawmaker’s warning underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and the urgent need for the ongoing diplomatic talks in Conakry to yield a lasting resolution.
