CHARGÉ D’AFFAIRES, EMBASSY OF MOROCCO, CALLS ON SPEAKER THOMAS TO COMMEND UK’S ENDORSEMENT OF MOROCCO’S AUTONOMY PROPOSAL

Khalid Akhsas, Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Mission, Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in Freetown, on Monday, 2nd June 2025, paid a courtesy call on the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas, Speaker of Sierra Leone Parliament, and also appealed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker to make a public Statement commending the United Kingdom’s endorsement of Morocco’s Autonomy proposal under the Moroccan Sovereignty.

In his address, Khalid Akhsas, Chargé d’Affaires and Head of Mission, Embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco, appealed to the speaker of the House of Parliament of the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, to publicly commend such significant shift that was expressed in a Joint Communiqué signed, Sunday in Rabat, by the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal.

“I believe that this is an influential, strong support emanating from a United Nations Security Council Permanent Member that carries a great significance as the third permanent U.N. Security Council member to endorse Morocco’s autonomy Proposal under Moroccan Sovereignty”, he said.

He added that the move is also in line with international legitimacy and marches with the unwavering support of the Government of Sierra Leone for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Moroccan Sahara that was reinforced by the opening of a consulate general of Sierra Leone in Dakhla in 2021.

He said the momentum and level of support, and awareness of the rightness of the Moroccan proposal represent the right time to settle this long-frozen regional dispute in order to establish a lasting peace and achieve a definitive solution to this artificial issue. He also used the opportunity to inform the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Slomon Thomas regarding potential training opportunities for Parliamentary Staffers.

In his response, the Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas welcomed the team to his office and parliament by extension. He considered the bold move by the United Kingdom in endorsing Morocco as a laudable move. Speaker Thomas instantaneously nodded to commend Morocco for attaining the United Kingdom endorsement. The Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas also commended Morocco’s proposed training opportunities for Parliamentary Staffers.
