The Budget Advocacy Network (BAN) on Thursday 12th February 2026 launched the Navigating Power Play Book at Elgreco Restaurant, Aberdeen, Freetown, with funding from Christian Aid.

In his welcome remarks, BAN’s National Coordinator, Abu Bakarr Kamara, set the tone for the event noting that civil society has a role in national development. The Chairperson of the occasion, Mattia Koi Demoh emphasized that the launch was an opportunity to reflect on diverse issues, noting that change is dynamic, not straightforward.
“This session will help us navigate,” he said, urging attendees to pay attention to the issues been discuss.
In his presentation, BAN Policy Analyst, Abu Bakarr Tarawally highlighted the book’s focus on supporting CSOs to drive change in complex contexts.
Key points included, Advocacy that involves influencing laws, policies, budgets, and practices, challenging power inequality and expanding civic space.
He said the Core pillars of advocacy include, analysis, participation, engagement, environment, risk, and adaptation.
Mr. Tarawaly noted that working in coalitions amplifies influence, shares risk, and boosts legitimacy.
The Deputy Auditor General, Audit Service Sierra Leone, Morie Lansana emphasized that everyone has power and should use it to drive positive change. “When power speaks, something must change,” he said, highlighting the ongoing challenges of implementing audit recommendations.
Mr. Lansana noted that Change is only possible when we all work together as a people. Let us make that change and it is only us that will make it happen,’’ he said.
