SLAJ Executive Members Assemble in Kenema for Post-Election Orientation

Executive members of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), both national and regional, have assembled in Kenema City for an official orientation program, marking the beginning of their three-year term following the recent SLAJ elections. The session, organized by the outgoing national executive, is part of an institutional tradition to guide incoming leaders on their roles and responsibilities.

Outgoing President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla emphasized that the orientation, first introduced by former SLAJ President Kelvin Lewis, has now become an integral part of the association’s transition process. He said the initiative helps instill a spirit of unity and clarity of purpose among elected members, which is essential for a successful tenure.

Constitutional lawyer Joseph Kapuwa Esq. took executive members through the association’s constitution, focusing on the responsibilities tied to their offices. He highlighted the importance of collective leadership, mutual support, and accountability. Kapuwa also outlined the disciplinary provisions in the SLAJ constitution, including grounds for removal from office in cases of criminal conduct or gross misconduct.

Veteran journalist Umaru Fofana shared personal experiences and lessons gathered over his decades-long career. His words served as a motivation for the new team. “The road to success is rough,” he said, “but with courage, honesty, commitment, and sacrifice, you can lead SLAJ to greater heights.” He urged them to be tolerant, resourceful, and willing to go the extra mile in serving the association.

In his farewell message, outgoing President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla congratulated all newly elected officials and expressed deep appreciation to the outgoing executive members at both national and regional levels. He encouraged the incoming team to stay away from corrupt practices and uphold the values of the association. Nasralla extended special thanks to past presidents including Umaru Fofana and Kelvin Lewis, Dr. Sowa, and other stakeholders who contributed to the success of his administration.

Umaru Fofana also called on the association’s membership to support the leadership of Alhaji Manika Kamara. He urged journalists to become more versatile and embrace digital media practices in order to remain relevant in the changing media landscape.

President-elect Alhaji Manika Kamara assured members of his commitment to serve SLAJ and the country with transparency, fairness, and dedication. He also disclosed that the association’s electoral body, SLAJEC, will soon announce the schedule for by-elections in the Southern Region, which remain pending.

The orientation marks a significant turning point for executive members elect as it prepares them to navigate a new chapter under fresh leadership.
