The Minister of Internal Affairs Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq, has today commissioned thirty brand new, customised and designed motorbikes to enhance traffic management and law enforcement capabilities across the country particularly in the capital city Freetown.
In commissioning the motorbikes, Minister Lengor Esq, mentioned that the commissioning aligns with Government’s commitment and its broader push to modernize and enhance the capacity and the capability of the Sierra Leone Police in protecting lives and property. He announced that they have started the process of transforming the police from police force to a police Service, which means the police have to be more responsive to the needs of the people.
“The motorbikes would be used by traffic police officers and other police personnel to respond to distress calls and to enforce the law on lawlessness and indiscipline” the Minister said. He further stated that there is now a designated toll-free number (900) for police emergencies across all networks. He however admonished the Police to observe integrity and eschew corruption in their work. He urged them to particularly fight crime, including drug trafficking, lawlessness and indiscipline in order to ensure safety and security in the Country.
Concluding, the Minister applauded the IGP and team on behalf of His Excellency the President Brig. Rtd. Julius Maada Bio, for their effort in bringing sanity in the city, and also for their laudable venture, in purchasing the motorbikes using savings from government allocated funds. The Minister further informed them that the Minister of Finance has assured him that notwithstanding the financial challenges, he will continue to provide funds for police operations.
The commissioning according to the Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu would be in response to emergencies, to enhance road safety, to curb lawlessness and indiscipline and traffic offences across the Country, with particular emphasies in the capital city. The IGP lauded praises on
the Minister of Internal Affairs for his invaluable support and exceptional show of leadership in strengthening the SLP. He ended assuring the Minister that the motorbikes would be used for its intended purposes.
