Freetown , Sierra Leone 9 June 2025 — Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh today paid an unannounced visit to the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority (SLPHA), describing the institution as a “gateway and lens into Sierra Leone’s transformation.”
The visit underscored government’s focus on service delivery, institutional efficiency, and economic growth key pillars of President Julius Maada Bio’s national agenda.
Dr. Sengeh noted a 158% increase in container traffic and a 37% rise in exports, citing these figures as clear signs of expanding trade and a strengthening economy. He praised the port’s tight security, with only a few intercepted contraband cases out of 135,000 containers annually.
With 36% gender representation in management, a youthful leadership, and certified staff, SLPHA stands as a model of public sector reform. Over the past two years, $11 million in concession fees have been paid to government, reflecting successful public-private partnerships.
Despite extended demurrage and auction timelines, the port remains among West Africa’s best performers, operating at 60% occupancy with all 8 berths fully engaged during the visit.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to digitization and investment, including a planned single window system, to further boost efficiency.
